The star anise (Illicium verum) is a spice and herb native to southern China. The Far East has long been using it as a spice and in medicine. Today it is primarily grown in Southern China’s Guangxi Csuang. The crop, which is harvested between March and May, makes up for a large percentage of the world’s star anise stock. Due to it’s special flavor and aroma, it is used to make delicacies such as special cakes, compotes, fruit soups, and teas. It is also one of the fundamental spices in some absinthe liqueurs. Thanks to the latest results of of pharmaceutical products, it is still used as an important active ingredient in certain medicines. Shikimic acid, the active substance found in star anise, is used in medication to prevent and treat influenza. |
