Peppermint is a hybrid mint, a cross between the watermint (Mentha aquatica) and spearmint (Mentha spicata). The plant, indigenous to Europe, is now widespread in cultivation throughout all regions of the world. Peppermint has a long tradition of medicinal use, with archaeological evidence placing its use at least as far back as ten thousand years ago. It contains 1-2% essential oils, of which 50% is menthol, and the remaining 50% is a combination of tanning agents, bitters, nicotinic acid, coffee acid, and cholorgenic acid.

Peppermint’s health benefits include that it can act as an appetizer, carmintaive, bile function stimulant, nerve sedative, antispasmodic, and antiseptic of the digestive and urinal tracts. It may also be used against gastro-enteritis, headaches, biliary cholic, throat pain, and hoarseness.
