The Horse-chestnut or Conker tree (Aesculus hippocastanum) is a large deciduous tree. The non-edible fruit is a green, softly spiky capsule containing one (rarely two or three) nut-like seeds called conkers or horse-chestnuts, which are used by folk medicine and modern medicine alike. It’s seeds and bark contain different active ingredients, effective as treatment for both venous circulatory failure and capillary weakness. Recent studies have demonstrated the aescin, which is the main active compound in horse chestnut, has an anti-inflammatory effect. Furthermore, high-quality evidence suggests aescin is a safe and effective treatment for chronic venous insufficiency. In one randomized controlled trial, horse chestnut extract was found to be as effective and well-tolerated as use of compression stockings.*
